This is my professional portfolio as a teacher candidate in the Master in Teaching program at The Evergreen State College.

Skillful Engagement

InTASC Standards:

  • The teacher makes learners feel valued and helps them learn to value each other (2n). 
  • The teacher takes responsibility for student learning and uses ongoing analysis and reflection to improve planning and practice (9I).
  • The teacher understands the expectations of the profession including codes of ethics, professional standards of practice, and relevant law and policy (9o).

Definition:

Skillful Engagement involves recognizing what you need to do, and motivating yourself to do it. It includes adapting one's approach to best serve oneself and one's community.

Intellectual Curiosity

InTASC Standards:

  •  The teacher is committed to using learners’ strengths as a basis for growth, and their misconceptions as opportunities for learning (1i).
  • The teacher is constantly exploring how to use disciplinary knowledge as a lens to address local and global issues (5q). 
  • The teacher sees himself as a learner, continuously seeking opportunities to draw upon current education policy and research as sources of analysis and reflection to improve practice (9n).
  • The teacher embraces the challenge of continuous improvement and change (10t).

Definition:

Intellectual Curiosity is the ability to take joy in the development of yourself, your classroom, and our shared learning community. Yearning for knowledge, viewing every context as a learning opportunity, questioning the world around you, and not accepting things on face value.

Critical Consciousness

InTASC Standards:

  • The teacher values diverse languages and dialects and seeks to integrate them into his instructional practice to engage students in learning (2o). 
  • The teacher recognizes the potential of bias in his representation of the discipline and seeks to appropriately address problems of bias (4q).
  • The teacher is committed to deepening understanding of his own frames of reference e.g., culture, gender, language, abilities, ways of knowing), the potential biases in these frames and their impact on expectations for and relationships with learners and their families (9m).

Definition:

Critical Consciousness is the ability to move beyond the confines of one’s own perspective. It attempts to think and feel from another’s perspective. In doing so, critical consciousness develops an understanding of our common humanity. It includes seeing oneself as a conduit for change, with the ability to reflect and adjust oneself and one’s environment accordingly.

Humility

InTASC Standards:

  • The teacher values the input and contributions of families, colleagues, and other professionals in understanding and supporting each learner's development (1k).
  • The teacher respects learners as individuals with differing personal and family backgrounds and various skills, abilities, perspectives, talents, and interests (2m).
  • The teacher appreciates multiple perspectives within the discipline and facilitates learner's critical analysis of these perspectives (4p).
  • The teacher respects families' beliefs, norms, and expectations and seeks to work collaboratively with learners and families in setting and meeting challenging goals (10q).

Definition:

Humility is a disposition remembering to consider others outside yourself, and that you engage in a constant exchange of ideas and learning. Humility is being open to feedback, reflection, and collaboration while recognizing that my ideas hold the same merit as peers.

Resilience

InTASC Standards:

  • The teacher believes that all learners can achieve at high levels and persists in helping each learner reach their full potential (2I).

Definition:

Resilience is the ability to persist in the face of constant and shifting resistance, and is the ability to continue on in spite of outside pressures and inevitable difficulties.
